Three thoughts on spending money
"There are people who pay well, who pay badly,
people who pay promptly, who never pay,
people who pay slowly, who pay cash,
pay in installments, pay extra, pay back —
only people who like to pay, they don't exist."
These words are attributed to Georg Christoph Lichtenberg, a German physicist who, 250 years ago, formulated in an inimitable way what is still true today: money is preferred to be received rather than spent.
Money has an almost magical effect on people: If you don't have it, it's a promise. If you have it, you want more of it. It's like some relationships: the only thing worse than being with you is being without you.
On this occasion, we have dug up three texts from our archive that ask three questions about money:
1. Does money make you happy? (Spoiler: yes and no)
2. Why is there a poverty line, but no wealth line?
3. What is a fair wage?
